Folder Item Limit Configuration

Overview

This page describes how to configure folder item limits in Bloomreach Content. Folder item limits help enforce the recommended practice of keeping no more than 100 items per folder to maintain optimal performance and usability.

When to Use

Configure folder item limits to:

Prevent performance degradation in the CMS UI caused by folders with too many items.
Enforce organizational best practices for content structure.
Ensure that both manual and automated content creation (including imports) adhere to folder size recommendations.

How Folder Item Limits Work

When you create, copy, translate, or upload documents, images, or assets, Bloomreach Content checks the number of items in the target folder. If the folder already contains 100 items (the default limit), the operation fails and returns an error. Subfolders count toward the item total in the parent folder.

The default limit is 100 items per folder.
You can configure this limit or disable it by setting the value to -1.
Adding subfolders is always allowed, so editors can continue organizing content as needed.
The delivery tier should be configured to support content in subfolders.

When the limit is exceeded, the system throws a FolderLimitException from the FolderWorkflowImpl and GalleryWorkflowImpl classes. This applies to both interactive content creation and automated content imports that use the Workflow system.

Configuration

The folder item limit is determined in the following order of precedence:

System property
Repository configuration
Default value (hardcoded)

A negative value (such as -1) disables folder item limit validation.

1. System Property

Set the system property repository.folderworkflow.item.limit to define the folder item limit globally.

2. Repository Configuration

You can configure the item limit at the repository level using the JCR property item-limit (type: Long). This property is bootstrapped in the following locations under /hippo:configuration/hippo:workflows, where the relevant workflow classes are present. You can set different limits for document and image folders as needed.

You can adjust these values independently to apply different limits to different folder types.

3. Default Value

If neither a system property nor a repository configuration is set, the default limit is 100 items per folder. This value is hardcoded in the ItemLimitValidator class.

Verification

To verify the configuration:

Attempt to add items to a folder that is below the configured limit. The operation should succeed.
Attempt to add an item to a folder that has reached the limit. The operation should fail with a FolderLimitException.
If the limit is set to -1, adding items should not be restricted by count.
